Mary Kaye Richter: From Florist to Accomplished Medical Crusader, Gone at 77

Mary Kaye Richter was an inspiration to all who knew her. Richter was born in the small town of Greenville, Illinois, in 1941. From a young age, Richter showed determination and a keen interest in medicine. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in the College of Nursing at the University of Illinois. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1966 and went on to specialize in pediatrics.

Richter put her skills to work, working in a variety of pediatric medical roles for the next few decades. She eventually retired from the U.S. Navy in 1988, having served as a nurse for 22 years. After retiring from the Navy, Richter transitioned to a new career in the world of rare disorder families. She founded a global foundation called “Families Against Rare Disorders” (FARD) and dedicated her life to helping families find treatment and support.

Richter was a true pioneer in the world of rare disorder families. She was the first to recognize the need for a global network of support for those affected by rare disorders, and she worked tirelessly to create the resources and support services that are needed by families around the world. She was a passionate advocate for those affected by rare disorders, and she worked closely with healthcare professionals, researchers and policy makers to ensure that those affected were given the best possible care and resources.

Richter’s work with FARD has had a profound impact on the lives of those affected by rare disorders. She was instrumental in the development of new treatments for rare disorders and in the creation of new support services for families. She was also a fierce advocate for the rights of patients and their families, and she worked to ensure that their voices were heard in the medical and policy making process.

Richter’s legacy is one of strength, courage and innovation. Sadly, Richter passed away in 2018 at the age of 77. She left behind an incredible legacy, one that will continue to inspire and empower those affected by rare disorder families. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched and in the many lives she changed.
